..what if everybody..? ..what if everybody not only used Firefox as a browser - but also combined it with Wladimir Palant’s free advertisement blocking plug-in ‘Adblock Plus’ (www.adblockplus.org)..? ..would there just be less ugly blinking ads on my screen and your monitor and on his and her and their internet browsing experience..? ..or would there be also less motivation for publishers to publish useful information online..? ..would there be less crap online..? ..fewer weblogs..? ..less growth..?
To sum it up: has ‘Adblock Plus’ the potential to bring the Empires of E-Marketing down to their financial knees..? ..might this the end of the free world wide web as we know it..?
At this point I’d like to freely quote from
H.P.Baxter’s Scooter’s current hit single:
“The Question is: What is the Question?!”
..or in my words: “The problem is: What is the Problem?!”
Well.. Currently there seems to be a lot of discussion going on about
moneteasing äh- monetization - or actually about the possible future problems of making money online by publishing ‘free’ content - which seems to be one of the sole reasons people publish things on the web anyways. Some people seem to be so bitter about this ‘problem’ that they started blocking Firefox - hoping to make Adsense-blocking visitors understand that advertisement is needed to cover the costs of free content.. Others seem to switch to in my opinion even worse/ more ‘evil’ advertisement techniques such as text-ads - text-links that are shown in the middle of a text - leaving the visitors of a website with no choice of ignoring or even blocking the ad since it ‘camouflages’ perfectly well..

Well - that’s how it goes sometimes: I just went through all the five phases of the “Million Dollar Homepage -Fever”.. .:!:. ..and decided to write at least a short article about the Million Dollar Homepage.
What happend.?! Well - here’s a short short version of what happened: a young man from Great Britan simply wanted to avoid taking study loans. So he came up with the idea to simply sell a million pixels of advertisement space - for one Dollar each. Greatness!
Now for the five phases: when I first saw that Homepage some time ago, I though (like probably 1 Million other people) something like: “Well. Wow. Hm. Aha.” - and then I tried to forget what I had just seen.
But meanwhile, things have happened: Alex has just sold 999000 Pixels, the last 1000 Pixels are on an auction on Ebay. It’s not too late yet: the auction is still on until 11th of January. But if you’d like to own a piece of internet history, you’ll at least have to bid a little bit more than $150000,-..
Is it now all over anyways?! Perhaps. Or maybe not. Maybe Bill Clinton’s quote from the Brandenburg Gate (Berlin) is just still valid and “Everything is possible”. Maybe.
I took the chance, looked at various other so called Pixel Pages, found a Pixel Page, where you can actually reserve some pixels for free, claimed a 10×50 pixel piece of that page, uploaded a 10×50 pixel TV-Tower and linked it to my Berlin pictures..
..we’ll see what’ll happen..:]
